15 of 26. AMBO - On the front panel of the Ambo are the images of the four evangelists identified with the four "living creatures" of Revlation 4:7. St. Jerome writes "The first face, that of a man, signifies Matthew, who begins to write, as of a man, the book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham; the second, Mark, in which is heard the voice of the Lian roaring in the desert, 'Prepare ye the way of the Lord'; the third, that of the Calf, prefigures Luke the Evangelist, commencing his history from the priest Zechariah; and the fourth, the Evangelist St. John, who having taken the wings of an eagle, and hastening to loftier things, speaks of the Word of God."
